Michael S. “Mike” Ham, Mayor

Our Town enjoys a unique location nestled between the Potomac River on the east and the waters of Monroe Bay on the West. We are one of the few remaining small seaport towns on the Potomac River. We are within a 2 hour commute for millions of people from Richmond to the south stretching north to the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area. However, whether you come to visit or live here full time or just enjoy the Town as a weekend retreat, you feel that you are thousands of miles from the hustle and bustle of the big city life. We really love our little “Paradise” here.

We have the second longest sandy public beach in Virginia on the Potomac side and marinas on the Monroe Bay side. Visitors and residents can enjoy fishing, sailing, boating, swimming and crabbing. Colonial Beach is also a very historical area, with George Washington and James Monroe’s Birthplaces nearby and Stratford Hall, the boyhood home of Robert E. Lee just a few minutes down the Potomac. Our small river Town was in it’s heyday during the 40′s & 50′s and there’s a renaissance happening. If you haven’t been here lately, you owe it to yourself to visit.

Colonial Beach has been a destination for tourists along the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay for over 75 years. We are a Golf Cart Community. You will see them everywhere and they range from standard carts to fully loaded and “dressed up” eye catching machines.

We are currently in the planning stages of a tremendous revitalization effort centered around the Boardwalk and Historic downtown commercial area.

The influence of the local artist community is evident throughoutthe town. The art galleries and some local businesses (in conjunction with the Colonial Beach Art Guild) participate in a 2nd Friday Art Walk year round. This draws locals and tourists from surrounding areas and the town is becoming known as an Art Mecca. Vacationers staying at the numerous rental cottages, bed & breakfasts, hotels and motels, are the mainstay of the Town’s economy for the summer months.

Throughout the year various town events are sponsored by local organizations and 5 big events are sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. They include the annual Potomac River Fireman’s Festival Carnival in June, Fireworks over the Potomac in June and July, International Jet Ski races on the Potomac in July and the Rockfish Tournament in November.

Colonial Beach is a great place to visit or live or to have a second home to use as a weekend retreat

Join the Staff and volunteers of George Washington Birthplace National Monument on Saturday, January 5 2013 in celebrating the Washington Family Christmas. The event will run from 10am-7pm.

Colonial Virginians–black and white, rich and poor–vigorously celebrated Christmas for 12 days–the period stretching from Christmas Day to the feast of the Epiphany on January 6. Advent, the period before Christmas Day, was considered a period of spiritual preparation without decorations or feasting.

Costumed volunteers and staff members will be hosting a Christmas party much like the Washington family might have done in the 1730′s. Cooks will prepare a lavish feast while visitors enjoy the mouth-watering smells from their creations. Children will be playing with their Christmas toys and enjoying the decorations in the house.

Visitors to the birthplace will enjoy all of this as well as some of the plantation work–like blacksmithing and spinning–that took place holiday or not. Visitors staying until dusk will be treated to the once-a-year lighting of candle lamps from the Visitor Center to the Memorial House. The Bookstore will be open until 7pm as well.

Georg Washington Birthplace National Monument is located on Route 204, 2 miles off of Route 3, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg, VA. Additional information about George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument is available by phone at (804) 224-1732 or on the web at www.nps.gov/gewa and facebook and twitter.
